As part of the Connected Educators Month we would like to have fellow educators submit a video(s) about your best practice using Technology in education. Why a video? Many times in the busy world of educators, we tend to skim what is written without truly engaging in the material. A video allows an educator to be more engaged with deeper and richer understanding.
The videos may be submitted by individuals or group and include grades K-12 (ages 5-18) demonstrating Best Practices using Technology in the classroom. Please limit the videos to less than 5 minutes and post the video to YouTube. Please use the following tags with the post: +Connected +Educator +2012 and include grade or age level . Once you have uploaded the video please share the link with us at pwyspianski@hotmail.com with the subject line EduTech Video. In case of email issues, please use garmanr273@aol.com .
Please submit your videos no later than August 26, 2012. After that date we will compile a playlist of the videos to be shared with the education community.

Some post several times a week to be "seen" in the course, while others simply wait and see what discussions are generated by the participants. We are curious to know what you think is the right fit for online facilitation. What do you feel is the happy medium for online facilitators? Weekly feedback? Bi-weekly? Should the facilitator post "landscape" or "summary" posts on a weekly basis? What has been your experience and preference?

In its simplest terms, the flipped classroom is about viewing and/or listening to lectures at home which frees up face-to-face class time for experiential exercises, group discussion, and question and answer sessions.
Two noteworthy problems exist when thinking about using the flipped classroom.
a. If video lectures drive the instruction, it is just a repackaging of a more traditional model of didactic learning. It is not a new paradigm nor pedagogy of learning.
b. Educators need to be re-educated as to what to do with the class time that previously was used for their lectures.
Join highly acclaimed educator and author, Jackie Gerstein and Powerful Learning Practice co-founder and CEO Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach for a free, live webinar about the flipped classroom approach. During our hour-long chat, we’ll talk about the basics of the flipped classroom approach and share examples of effective flipped classrooms.
During this session, we will share the global learning opportunities associated with DeforestACTION. By showcasing the various educational resources, social media and technology tools, you can learn more about this opportunity to help students develop global competencies through international collaborations. You will also hear from other DeforestACTION educators currently involved in the program. The will share their experiences on how they got involved, the projects their schools were undertaking, and the benefits of this type of program for teaching and learning. Come prepared with your questions, network with other educators, and become inspired to begin your DeforestACTION journey!

Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books. Students read books, then create a video (or even just photos using Animoto) in movie trailer-style to get other students to read that book (persuasion).
Then, once the video is on Animoto or Schooltube.com, students use a free QR code generator to print a QR code that links directly to that trailer. They tape the QR code to the inside jacket of the book (if in the library or teacher's room) where other students can use iPod touch, iPad, Android devices, etc. to view the trailers. Our kids love these! Books with QR codes are indicated by a "BT" label on the spine.
This will be a fully guided tour from start to finish from a student's perspective. We will make a book trailer, upload the video, make a QR code, and see what the finished product looks like.

The American Historical Association (AHA) is initiating a nationwide, faculty-led project to articulate the core of historical study and to identify what a student should understand and be able to do at the completion of a history degree program.
The AHA’s initiative to “tune the history major” encompasses three broad objectives. This webinar session will provide an overview of the project and then discuss the objectives below with a focus on how they will impact secondary history education.
1)Articulate the core abilities, habits of mind, and knowledge required of their discipline
2)Develop a clear, common language to express the distinctive value of history for students, employers, and public culture. Students who can see clearly what they are learning, and why, are better equipped to direct their studies towards lifelong learning, meaningful employment, and civic participation;
3) Provide a nationwide framework in which historians can design the systems used by their institutions to measure their achievements as teachers.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Students spend only 14% of the year in school. Those informal educators we call parents are truly their long-term “homeroom” and most important teachers. How can we professional educators support and promote family engagement in learning? How can we enable parents to support their children’s success in school and life? And, in these economic times, how can we wisely harness the potential of parents to support our classrooms and schools?
Discuss 10 strategies offered by educator Maria Chesley Fisk, Ph.D. and see how ParentSquare’s private online home-school communication platform saves time (and money) while increasing parent engagement in homework help, reinforcing content, and volunteering.

Simplicity is bliss. While there are many great comprehensive and complex programs out there to engage girls in science, technology, engineering and math, we won't be discussing those in this session. Instead we will be looking at simple ways to engage girls and young women in STEM.
Starting with exposure and incorporating ways to engage and build academic confidence, this simple approach is aiming to move the needle on the number of women entering STEM fields.

Education and technology leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders in educational institutions need forward thinking information addressing opportunities for teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. Hear about the key trends, challenges, and emerging technologies identified in the recently released NMC Horizon Report: 2012 K-12 Edition. Each of these technologies has the potential to strongly impact teaching, learning, and creative inquiry, but the Report is clear about not being a predictive tool. We know priorities are determined by local needs and concerns. Technologies identified in the Report just form a road map for discussion, local reflection, conversation, and consideration for how each might be used to address specific needs and problems facing a school or district.
Learn too about how to use the CoSN Horizon Report: 2012 K-12 Edition Toolkit to help share findings of the Report and facilitate discussion focused on problems facing local stakeholders. The Toolkit seeks to help stakeholders re-imagine learning and work together to investigate emerging technologies and not just hear the message from the "technology person". It provides strategies and activities to help get all involved, to break down the learning, and to give ownership to all stakeholders for being involved in the process of thinking about local problems and investigating whether new technologies might help address them.

Global collaboration starts with connecting yourself to the world. Students are the greatest textbook ever written for each other. The same is true for teachers. We are passionate about connecting and facilitating effective collaborations between classrooms because we’ve seen the power of how it can engage students and teach them the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century.
We want to bring in people who are nervous, who don’t know how, or who have tried to connect and were frustrated. We also want to bring back those teachers who tried it and got burned out. Now it is time to enlarge the circle of global collaborative excellence in a massive way. To help facilitate this conversation, Flat Classroom are joining with TakingITGlobal.
Have you purchased or started to read 'Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time'? yet? Why not join this book club and be part of the conversation around the book, part of the conversation around Flat Classroom AND part of the conversation around Taking IT Global and their virtual classroom facility. The book club will run through the Flat Classroom space on the TIGED website (http://flatclassroom.tiged.org/). Participants can register with the code: bookclub.
This Book Club will be held every Wednesday at 5pm for 4 weeks, finishing on September 12.

Over the history of educational technology in U.S. schools much has been said and done to persuade teachers to make use of micro-computers, laptops, the Web, Web 2.0, and most recently mobile devices. While there are teachers in our schools who are doing a great job using ed tech to energizing learning in their classroom, the use or non-use has been generally optional for teachers. So the effective use of connectivity varies from classroom to classroom. The fundamental premise of this webinar is that being connected is a necessity for our teachers in order to provide what our kids need to know and be able to do in their lives now and in the future. This webinar will consider questions such as: What does being connected mean?; What role does connectivity play in the work of teachers?; What are the factors that constrain connectivity and what can be done to ov ercome the constraints?

Sugata Mitra
MIT Media Lab and Newcastle University (http://sugatam.wikispaces.com)
Dr. Sugata Mitra is a visiting professor at MIT Media Lab in the US and Professor of Educational Technology, School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, at Newcastle University in the UK. His biography from his now-famous TED talks reads: "In 1999, Sugata Mitra and his colleagues dug a hole in a wall bordering an urban slum in New Delhi, installed an Internet-connected PC, and left it there (with a hidden camera filming the area). What they saw was kids from the slum playing around with the computer and in the process learning how to use itand how to go online, and then teaching each other.
"In the following years they replicated the experiment in other parts of India, urban and rural, with similar results, challenging some of the key assumptions of formal education. The "Hole in the Wall" project demonstrates that, even in the absence of any direct input from a teacher, an environment that stimulates curiosity can cause learning through self-instruction and peer-shared knowledge. Mitra, who's now a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University (UK), calls it 'minimally invasive education.'"

We thank you in advance for your support in this endeavor.
This event runs from August 3 through August 26.

Learning in all disciplines is complex and individualized. As such, educators must know the core concepts of their discipline ifthey are to help students grasp new ideas, solve problems, collaborate, and use their imaginations to pursue challenging questions. The Connected Learning Coalition, representing 250,000 content-area teachers, administrators, educational technology specialists and other educators, was formed to outline the following six Principles for Learning:
1) Being literate is at the heart of learning in every subject area.
2) Learning is a social act.
3) Learning about learning establishes a habit of inquiry important in life-long learning.
4) Assessing progress is part of learning.
5) Learning includes turning information into knowledge using multiple media.
6) Learning occurs in a global context.
At this Live Chat, the executive directors of the participating associations will explain the Principles and answer questions about what this means as a foundation for transforming K-12 education. Understanding core knowledge in a discipline—how to apply these concepts within and outside of a discipline, and how to teach these concepts effectively—is integral to the Principles outlined here. Beginning August 20th, you can access short videos that elaborate on the six Principles of Learning via the epic-ed Youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/epicedcommunity
The Connected Learning Coalition includes the following member organizations:
Association for Career and Technical Education
Consortium for School Networking

National Council of Teachers of English
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

The move toward ubiquitous computing environments impacts everyone who works in a school or district. Administrators, teachers, CTOs, and instructional technology facilitators must collaborate to implement a large-scale plan. At the heart of the work to purchase hardware and software, develop infrastructure, and provide professional development, digital transition is about a common cultural belief that learning and teaching must look different when technology is used appropriately.
This interactive session examines the role of technology in teaching and learning as well as a research-based framework to guide schools and districts through their implementation plan. It is designed for all stakeholders in a school or district who are planning or implementing a technology-rich initiative. You will learn how to engage with other stakeholders from around the nation to empower your digital transition. At the end of the session, you will receive a webliography of free resources and an opportunity to join a free national cohort program!

In today’s environment, there can be too little recognition of the effort you’re making to become a connected educator and help others. Into this void largely informal forms of recognition have evolved, especially badges. We kickoff the CEM wrap-up with a special panel that will discuss badges in general, but more particularly potential criteria for and implementation of a new series of cross-community, cross-organizational, series of badges specifically for connected educators and connected communities, designed to complement, supplement, include, promote, and draw on existing badge systems. During the session, we also plan to unveil a new catalog of badges from a range of issuers related to being a connected educator.

Teacher evaluations are a time-consuming and paper-extensive process for many schools and districts. However, it doesn't have to be. New technology is making it easier for school districts to complete teacher evaluations online in an automated process to free up educators and administrators alike while reducing expenses.
Learn how automation can:
- Improve the professional conversation between teacher and evaluator
- Reduce the Principal's workload of collecting and analyzing data
- Provide transparency into the process from administration to staff
- Meet the state requirements for teachers that are unsatisfactory or need improvement
Join this webinar live to have your questions answered by Jim Spicuzza, CEO of Ed Automate on how automation can help your school and district reduce paper waste and costs. If you can't make it live, this presentation will be available immediately after the presentation concludes.

A special panel of students will share what connected learning has meant to them and, especially, what it’s meant to have a connected educator (or two) in their lives. They’ll also share their own tips for educators and ideas for a more connected educational world.

There’s a revolution afoot in education, and at its core are two interrelated concepts—connected education and personalized learning. Connected education provides unique opportunities for educators to take the lead in the redefining of the profession that’s going on, to insure it meets our needs and the needs of our students. Distributed leadership and teacher-led change was the subject of another CEM kick-off panel and a month-long forum; it’s also been implicitly in the DNA of the entire Connected Educator Month endeavor, including these final sessions. So it’s especially important that we hear from you as we strategize together (with thought leaders like Shelly Blake-Plock, Lisa Dabbs, Gwyneth Jones, David Loertscher, Cheryl Redfield, and Shelly Terrell) about the best ways we can all use online communities and networks to insure the voice of practice is heard at the highest levels and drives the direction of education.

Instead of operating in silos, educators across disciplines and in different roles in schools must collaborate. The principles of the Connected Learning Coalition, composed of six large professional associations, unite all the Coalition’s members in supporting teaching and learning. We believe a formative assessment process assures that educators use during assessment their own expertise and knowledge of their students. The current obsession with summative evaluation thwarts rather than helps student learning and school improvement.
This web conference highlights formative assessment - its purposes, processes, and benefits. Both research and practices signal that formative assessment is essential to effective teaching and learning. New technologies offer more possibilities than ever to assess learning as it happens and to provide feedback that is immediately useful. What tools do we have available to us today to begin the re-imagination of education, and what’s on the horizon for us? New technologies and innovations were the subject of one of our kick-off panels and a month long forum; the CEM calendar has also been chock-full of events and activities showcasing new platforms, offerings, elements, and techniques. Drawing on all the above, and with the help of thought leaders like Bobbi Kurshan, Greg Limperis, Sylvia Martinez, Jeff Piontek, Robin Raskin, and Audrey Watters, we’ll collectively weave a vision for the connected future as we want to see it unfold, the new technologies and innovations we most want to see developed, as well as those we simply want to see made more available and used in our classrooms and beyond.

With mobile devices becoming more prevalent in the classroom, it is no wonder that many educators are looking to these devices to improve the learning environment. Add a flipped classroom strategy, inverting the traditional teaching methods by delivering instruction online outside the classroom and moving "homework" into the classroom, and there could be huge potential for learning and growth. But firstly, we have to solve how iPads, or other mobile devices can transform the classroom and what if a flipped strategy was also applied. In this webinar, we will discuss these two key issues in three essential questions: why integrate iPads, why the flipped model and how these two things go together to create a dynamic learning environment.
Join Beth Holland, Senior Associate at EdTechTeacher and Greg Kulowiec, Instructor & Presenter, at EdTechTeacher as they answer your questions live about a flipped classroom approach with iPads. If you can't make it live, the presentation will be available immediately afterwards on demand.

So the revolution is underway, but so is the school year, or it’s about to be. What we can and should be doing to develop ourselves as 21st century educators was the focus of another CEM kick-off panel and month-long forum, and many, if not all, CEM events and activities created by participating groups were focused on professional development in one form or another. We’ll use all of the above, and the help of thought leaders like Brian Crosby, Jackie Gerstein, Lucy Gray, Lani Ritter Hall, Stephanie Sandifer (and more) to communally generate a PD road map for ourselves, as well as action items to share with the department and the field.

Even more immediately upon us are the critical first six weeks of the school year, which so often set the tone for what we can achieve throughout. For this reason, the first six weeks were a final CEM kick-off and forum focus, and an implicit target of many CEM events and activities. Of all the main CEM themes, this is the one we most fully control ourselves today, and as result this open discussion, drawing on the First Six Weeksforum and other relevant CEM events/activities (as well as the expertise of Becky Bair, Suzie Boss, Patrice Dawkins-Jackson, Thomas Diener, Lyn Hilt, and others) will be about generating takeaways and action items not for the Department or ‘the field,’ but for ourselves, to begin to put in place today.

Beyond the explicit themes of CEM, there have been a huge range of events and activities during the month. And even within the areas most explicitly covered, there has probably been more learned than we can all assimilate right away. In this final CEM session of the month, and with the help of a number of special guests, including Barnett Berry, Milton Chen, Gavin Dykes, Julie Hiltz , Stephanie Sandifer, and others, we consider the entire expanse of CEM activities and seek to distill them down to a handful of the top takeaways we can and should all carry with us into the school year and beyond, as well as the top policy implications of the month.
